Rose - wip

"Rose" - wip
6" x 6"

I should probably leave the florals to Arena Shawn and Jacqueline Gnott, but I couldn't help but try the latest DPW challenge.  This is on Aquabord. It has a long way to go, but I thought I'd share.  I can't tell you how many paintings I have going that I need to finish, not to mention the ones that I'm ready to start. I was hoping that I would be painting and posting pretty regularly like I'd done a couple weeks ago, but then life got in the way and I was once again behind the eight ball. I guess that's just how it's going to be so thanks for continuing to follow my erratic posting.

That reminds me of a story -- my dad was once stopped on his way home from work by a policeman because apparently he was swerving around the road. The police officer thought he was drunk, but my dad was just trying to change the station on the radio. (Luckily he got off with just a warning). However, when my dad relayed the story to my mom and me he said the officer told him he was "driving erotically" at which point we burst out laughing. We told him we were pretty sure the policeman said "erratically" unless my dad was doing something WAY different than just changing the radio stations . . . and he probably wouldn't have been let off with just a warning.  :)

  1. This is beautiful, Kara. I love the delicate shading and softness of the colours. Beautiful, warm, happy.

Adorable story about your dad driving - emmm - erotically. Thanks for cheering me up on this very grey and soggy Irish day.

  2. This is amazingly luminous. I love your flowers! It's very different from my approach but the results are always amazing. I found it very very difficult to paint soft edged washes on Aquaboard so hats off to you on this one. The colors do stay very saturated and bright on this surface though, so for me it's a love-hate relationship, I just have to try it (and fail) again and again periodically. One of these days I have to stand behind and watch you paint on it and learn your secrets...

Thank you very much for the kind, encouraging words you left on my blog. I had many heart-breaking experiences of rejection from art shows this year but I will try to only remember the ones I did get in ;-). Hug...

I am doing this one too -- very, very, very slowly. I don't think mine would be done by the end of this week but I'm trying anyway. No deadline for DPW challenges anyway ;-) Regarding unfinished projects -- ha! I think we can compete on that department. Enjoy your summer and happy painting!

    1. I can't wait to see yours -- I'm sure it will put mine to shame. Your florals are just incredible! I just love that aquabord and in fact ordered more today. I think some of the secret to getting soft washes is to REALLY wet the board so that the water is rolling around. Then, if you let it get very dry, you can do the same with multiple washes without really disturbing the underpainting too much. I also go back in and paint wet on dry, feathering my painting with water to avoid hard edges. I think once you got the hang of it you would be hooked. Especially after sealing it. I happen to use a gloss finish which is probably ridiculous, but I just LOVE that it still looks wet.

  3. I like the color variations, the calmness and simplicity of it, well done.
