Trying Something New

"The White Barn"
(approximately) 6" x 6"

(what this painting could look like framed)

I've decided to try something different.  I feel like I've been getting all bogged down with obsessive detail and not letting the watercolor really do what it can do.  In fact, I know I don't always use the watercolor to its highest potential; i.e. letting it get all wild and beautiful like it can.  So I've decided to set the timer to an hour and paint.  Get back to  . . . well get to (I can't in good conscience really say "back," because I don't know that I've ever just let the water and pigment play on the paper really) a little more spontaneity. So this is my first attempt. Ha! It's not really "loose" -- I don't know that I'll ever be loose, but it's a good start (for me). I think I will put this in a little exhibit/sale that is coming up in Jaffrey, NH soon. If it doesn't sell, then I will auction it off over at DPW.  I'll keep you posted.  In the meantime . . . I'm off to obsess over details . . . but don't worry, I like obsessing over detail.  It's fun for me.  :)  But I swear, I'm going to try to maintain this little hour-long daily exercise, so be forewarned, there may be some real messes coming down the pike. Hopefully more hits than misses though. Happy painting to you all!

  3. That is really a lovely piece Kara!! I applaud you for stepping out of your comfort zone and trying to go "wild":)) I had that exact same idea last week, I think when I was listening to AHA, the thought of just putting brush to paper and being done in an hour is mind boggling. I especially like the idea when I'm laboring over a piece for 40+ hours and there are so many fabulous paintings that took just a couple. So keep on sister friend!! Can't wait to see your experiments:)) And loving your wip from your last post. Especially the quilt. I've been wanting to paint my Great Grandmother's quilts that I've inherited.

    1. Ha . . . I know what you mean. :) Thanks Carrie, for your encouragement. I'd like to do more with quilts . . . that's so nice that you have your Great Grandmother's. You would do a wonderful job I'm sure, painting them. Ooooh . . . I hope you do sometime. :) And if you haven't clicked on her link to the left, check out Chris Krupinski's site -- AMAZING quilts! I wish she blogged, I keep looking for new work from her. I wonder if she'd do an interview with you? I'm such a fan, I'd love to learn more about her process. Just a thought. :)

    2. I love Chris Krupinski's quilts and would die to learn how she paints them. Whenever I see her work in a show my jaw just keeps dropping. I'm not very good at painting fabrics, so when I see your step-by-step of the painting, it's very helpful and informative -- thanks for sharing. Seeing how the various patterns gradually emerge from the breezing underwash is an amazing experience.

The challenge you've taken here is very inspiring -- I am a very slow and fuzzy painter and I do not know whether I could do anything in an hour, or a couple of hours. But I'd like to give it a try! It may not turn out as good as this one though -- it's really looking very lively and free... I love the palette you used in it.

      Keep it going, Kara!

  6. I love your detailed paintings, but this is beautiful in its own way. My favorite part is the way the trees look...that watery, blurry mass of colors with the details of the branches over it. Just beautiful!
